List of Speakers, 2014

 All meetings are on the third Sunday of the month from 3:00pm to 5:00 pm in the Bayport/ Blue Point Library.

2014 

January 19th, Sunday at 3:00 pm 
Martha Kolodkin, retired history teacher, will speak about “How it came about”.

Martha says, “Have you ever wondered how the everyday things we use came to be?  Did you ever think about how certain events really did happen?  If your answer is ‘yes’, have I got a program for you.
 In this presentation, we will learn about people, places, events, and things.  Do you know how we got the first ice cream cone?  How about the incredible coincidence that caused World War I?  Or, maybe you want to know what Hedy Lamarr has to do with your cell phone.”

Answers to these and other interesting beginnings will be addressed by Martha Kolodkin, a veteran lecturer.  Come on down, have some fun, and learn in the process! 



February 16th, Sunday at 3:00 pm 
Gene Horton, retired teacher and local historian will present the program:
“George Washington and Long Island.”
Gene will be covering the life and times of the “Father of our Country” and his famous five-day tour of Long Island.


March 16th, Sunday at 3:00 pm 
Joe Novak retired teacher and wood carver will present a program and slide show about the Teddy Roosevelt, the Rancher.
We all know about Teddy Roosevelt the politician and Teddy Roosevelt the leader of the Rough Riders, but how much do you know about Teddy Roosevelt the cowboy?
 After his first wife died, Teddy traveled west and became a rancher. 
Come learn about this part of his life from Joe Novak. 
Also discussed, the Teddy Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota.

May 18th, Sunday at 3:00 pm
Did you know there are more old wooden windmills preserved on eastern Long Island than any other place in the United States? 
Many were built in the early 1700s and 1800s. 
Gene Horton, our local historian, will present a program on the 
“Windmills of Eastern Long Island.”

Ginny Fields of the Great South Bay Audubon Society and Board member of the Friends of Connetquot State Park, will be speaking on the topic of “Birding in the Backyard…”

Sunday, October 12th, 2014 Meeting, 2:00 pm
Monica Musetti-Carlinis from Sayville and has worked for the Suffolk County News for the past 14 years in marketing and advertising. She will be presenting a talk and demonstration surrounding the autumn apple harvest and will be serving her signature applesauce and applesauce cake. Both recipes appear in
COUNTRY COMFORT: HARVEST.

Sunday, November 9th, 2014 Meeting
Skip Bement is a musician who has been playing in clubs and concerts in and around New York since 1966. 
Although he now lives in Bellport, he grew up in the south where he developed his love of
PIEDMONT and DELTA BLUES
He plays this great old music on an acoustic guitar.
