Barney M. Loughlin, 1925-2017
It is with great sadness that the Bayport Heritage Association announces the passing of Barney Loughlin, owner of Loughlin Vineyards located on the historic Meadow Croft Estate. He passed away on Saturday, April 30th after a short stay in hospice. He was 91 years old.
Barney was the son of Irish immigrants who were the caretakers of the John Ellis Roosevelt Estate in Sayville. Barney was a World War II Veteran and a long time type-setter for the Suffolk County News, Fire Chief of the Sayville Fire Department, and creator of a fireman’s magazine called Smokey. He was also an inventor who created equipment and tools for firemen.
Described as hardworking, funny and determined, Barney enjoyed talking to the many visitors who stopped by the cozy Loughlin tasting room. He and his family decided to plant the vineyard on their 6 acre plot in 1982 after being told by East End growers that he would not succeed in the Sayville area. He clearly proved them wrong.
As a growing Historical Association, Barney was essential in sharing stories, making suggestions, and providing artifacts to help us fulfill our mission. Barney was one of a kind, loved by all and will be missed. Our deepest condolences to his family.
